Are you planning to race a late July or August triathlon, such as the Pittsburgh Sprint or Olympic Triathlon this year?  Are you interested in coaching, but don’t want to commit to a one-on-one coaching service?  Here’s your chance to work with two certified triathlon coaches, have a detailed training plan to follow to prepare you for your race, and train and interact with like-minded people.

Develop endurance, speed and confidence specifically for multi-sport racing!  If you’re serious about training for and completing the Pittsburgh Triathlon (or a late summer Sprint or Olympic race), join us to train and reach your goal with a group!  Coaches Anne-Marie Alderson and Mike Bauer will offer the support, expertise and motivation needed to keep you going strong.


Basic training plan is comprised of 6 core weekly workouts (2 each swim, bike, run) with suggested add-on workout options for participants who would like to log additional training time in one or more disciplines (recommended).  Expected time for 6 workouts/week not to exceed 5-6 hours for Sprint and not to exceed 9 hours for Olympic race.

Training plan includes thorough descriptions of all workouts.  Heart rate guidelines are provided for participants wishing to train with heart rate monitor.  Workouts will be a mix of base-building aerobic training and moderate/high intensity interval training.  Workout plans can be adapted by ability level and variations will be provided.

Pittsburgh Triathlon Details

  • Optional add-on Open Water Swimming practice at Moraine State Park (extra fee required for open-water license/insurance) 


  • Race-day support from coaches
  • 7 Coached group workouts/clinics scheduled to focus on specific aspects of triathlon training and race preparations:
    • 3 Group runs + group check-in with Coaches to discuss upcoming workouts, connect with other Just Tri It! participants and get answers to any questions you have.  Southside Trail.
      • Saturday, May 13 (9:30am) – Kickoff! Run + Coffee with Coaches!
      • Sunday, June 4 (7:45am)
      • Sunday, July 9 (7:45am)
    • 1 Bike + run “brick” group workout at Budd Harris Cycling Track (aka Highland Park “bike oval”) on Washington Blvd.  Bike helmet is mandatory.
      • Thursday June 1, 7:00pm
    • 1 Transition Clinic & group ride on Southside/GAP Trail.  Bike helmet is mandatory. 
      • Saturday June 10, 7:30am
        • Learn about swim – bike and bike – run transitions, and practice them (well, except for the swimming part… but you can bring cap, goggles, and wetsuit to make it more realistic!).
        • Group Ride on Southside/GAP trail
    • 1 Pool-based Swim clinic to develop good form and increase efficiency in the water — North Park Pool
      • Saturday, June 17 (1:00pm)
        • Note: Participants will need to pay their own entrance fee to pool (approx $6-8 cash).
    • 1 Group Run on the Pgh Tri Run Course + Race Strategy session with coaches & Q & A.  Location:  Point State Park.
      • Saturday Aug 5, 8:00am
    • Inclement weather (rain and/or thunder/lightning) cancels or modifies workouts at Coaches’ discretion.  Make-up sessions are not guaranteed
    • Locations/dates subject to change. 

To begin training for the SPRINT, it is recommended that…

  • You can swim 400 yards continuously
  • You are comfortable swimming in open water
  • You can ride a bike for 20 minutes continuously
  • You can run/walk a 5k

 To begin training for the OLYMPIC race, it is recommended that…

  • You can swim 800-1000 yards continuously
  • You are comfortable swimming in open water
  • You can ride a bike for 45 minutes continuously
  • You can run a 5k
